Win over Cove would put Boyne Hill in pole position for TVL Division 1 title

Sajid Ali

Boyne Hill captain Tom Mellor says whoever wins Saturday’s game with Cove will be in a very good position to go on and take the TVL Division 1 title this summer.

Hill continue to lead the way after beating Stoke Green by four wickets on Saturday, where James Hammerton smashed 76 to help the visitors chase down Green’s score of 198-7.

Basharat was the mainstay of Green’s innings, making 63, but with Hammerton once again in fine form at the crease, Hill brought up their double century for the loss of only six wickets with four overs to spare.

Mellor was impressed with his side’s run chase, but knows they’ll need to be equally strong in their remaining games against second placed Cove and Ickenham on the final weekend. Cove beat Ickenham by eight wickets at the weekend.

“Whoever wins the game on Saturday will be in a good position going into that final game,” said Mellor.

“We’d still have to get some points against Ickenham, but if we win on Saturday we’ll be very nicely placed.

“We won the toss and bowled at Stoke Green. I didn’t think we bowled brilliant. I thought their score was 30 over par really, and a couple of their young lads batted well in the middle order. But we batted superbly, with James Hammerton getting 76 and Sajid Ali coming in and getting a quick 40 with a couple of huge sixes. We managed the chase well.

“I think we’ve now won five, lost one and had one game which was rained off. We were conscious of the fact we had a poor second half to last year, so we were keen to get back on track. The availability has been good because less people have been on holiday and we’ve enjoyed it.

“It would be great if we could win the league. If you turn up every Saturday looking to win then by default you want to win the league, don’t you? Everyone has played everyone, and it’s been a good competition. We’d be very pleased if we could win but Cove are very good in these limited over games. They generally win almost all of them so we’re expecting a very tough game. But we have home advantage and we’re looking forward to it.”
