A record-breaking number of walkers raised £100,000 for Thames Hospice by taking part in the charity’s annual Sunflower Walk.

More than 700 brightly dressed supporters took part in the walking challenge on Sunday.

Walkers chose between a scenic 2.5k walk around Bray Lake, a 10k powerwalk to Dorney Lake, or a more challenging half marathon along the Thames Path to the Long Walk near Windsor Castle and back.

Each challenge started and finished at Thames Hospice’s scenic grounds by Bray Lake.

Claire Redrup, Thames Hospice’s head of community and fundraising said: “I am absolutely elated at the record turnout and amount raised for our wonderful event this year.

“It was very special to chat with, and thank, everyone who joined us, from those who have walked every
year to others who joined us for the first time.”

After crossing the finishing line, all walkers received an ‘eco-friendly medal’ – which contained a seed – which the charity encourages participants to plant and grow.

This year, supporters ‘smashed another record’, collectively fundraising £100,000 to support Thames Hospice’s vital work.

The amount raised could fund the work of two nurses for a year. Many participants walked to reflect on the precious memories shared with loved ones.

The Doyle family raised more than £5,000 in memory of husband and father James who recently died after being cared for at the hospice.

His daughter Laura Doyle said: “We took part in the Sunflower Walk for Thames Hospice because they’ve provided light during the darkest of hours.

“He (James) battled the bravest fight, where his strength, determination and sense of humour have kept us all going.

“When we set our initial target at £250, we couldn't have imagined that we’d exceed £5,000.

“We are immensely grateful, and we know that Dad is smiling down on us with gratitude as well.”

A metal sunflower display was also placed in the hospice gardens.

This gave walkers the chance to remember their loved ones.

The hospice paid tribute to all its staff and volunteers who helped support this year’s Sunflower Walk.
