Oldfield Primary School pupils given lessons in first aid

From grazed knees to bumps and burns, pupils at Oldfied Primary School will be all the more prepared in the face of a medical emergency after receiving first aid training this week.

Mini First Aid provides first aid for all the family - training adults and children as young as three in basic and life-saving first aid.

Chloe Hill, from the Thames Valley branch of Mini First Aid, delivered the sessions at the school in Bray Road.

On Monday and Tuesday, key stage two pupils explored how to respond in an emergency first aid situation.

They practiced CPR, learned what to do when someone is choking using a ‘choking vest’, how to treat a burn, a break or a bleed and how to put someone in the recovery position.

Topics for discussion included how to get help in an emergency and what they must not do in a first aid situation.

Sessions for the key stage one pupils will take place tomorrow (Friday) – these will cover grazes, head bumps, calling 999, and the recovery position.

The classes will also help children understand what may happen to them in a first aid situation.

Headteacher Richard Jarrett said: “I believe it is important that children need to learn the vital skills involved in saving lives.

“As a school we are delighted to be able to offer this opportunity to our children.

“Those children that have completed the course this week have commented that is has been informative and fun.”
