Maidenhead based Abbie Jones says she hopes to continue volunteering for Maidenhead Athletic Club (MAC) for years to come after winning a young volunteer of the year award from England Athletics.

Abbie, 17, was presented with the south east award at Slinfold Golf Club near Horsham this week.

Abbie is a talented runner who has represented her county and has been with MAC since the age of seven. For years she's helped out with the younger athletes at the club, often before her own training sessions, and has inspired many people along the way.

“I am very grateful to receive this award and I would like to thank the people who nominated me," she said.

"I have had great fun volunteering at Maidenhead Athletic Club and will continue to do so for years to come.”

She currently competes in jumps, sprints, middle-distance events as well as cross country.

Last year she completed her Gold Duke Of Edinburgh award which involved 12 months of volunteering on a weekly basis. She also took on the additional role of coaching the u11s boys sportshall team where she organised 24 boys and helped them to medal success and regional recognition. She is now a level 1 qualified coach for the club.

A statement from MAC said: "Abbie is enthusiastic, supportive and encouraging, she ran with a partially sighted girl, coaches’ children with all sorts of additional needs, and wholly supports our inclusive club. She’s passing on all her knowledge and love of athletics.

"Abbie coaches whilst working a Saturday evening job, studying for her A levels, doing her DofE and competing herself, and has plans to continue on the coaching pathway and take on another sportshall team. She’s an inspirational young lady, most definitely deserving of this award."

Abbie's name will now be put forward to an external panel who will select the finalists for the prestigious National Volunteer Awards.
