A previous seminar.
A self-defence seminar aiming to empower women in and around the Maidenhead area by providing them with the skills needed for self-protection is being held this International Women’s Day.
Almost every year since it opened, Shuhari’s Self Defence, a club teaching self defence and martial arts skills, has put on a free self-defence seminar for women to learn personal safety techniques and boost their confidence.
The interactive seminar, led by experienced instructors, will take place on Friday, March 8 from 7.30pm to 9.30pm at Larchfield Primary School on Bargeman Road.
Open to women aged 16 and over of all abilities from Maidenhead and the surrounding areas, the physical training session gives participants the chance to learn self defence strategies and technique to both avoid and survive dangerous situations.
The seminar will cover a host of subjects, some of which will include, awareness and avoidance, how to survive knife crime, how to not freeze when you are confronted, how to cope in a situation of domestic abuse, how to release yourself from someone's grip, pre-emption and impact, de-escalation and escape and how to deal with a stronger, taller and heavier attacker.
Chief instructor, Olgun Tiltay, said: “On the 8th March we give back to the local community by doing a free female self defence seminar to celebrate International Women’s Day.
“We cover everything in the spectrum as much as we can. [This includes] how somebody grabs your wrist – how to release yourself from that grip.”
Olgun said the seminar also features a question-and-answer element, which covers the specific needs of participants who can share their stories and seek advice.
Other topics covered at the session include nights out at clubs, road rage, and what to do if a person’s home is being burgled.
“It’s basically a life-saving seminar.
“The idea is to empower women who live in and around the Maidenhead area in a practical, pragmatic way,” Olgun added.
He explained that the session is inclusive to all and there are techniques shared that can be carried out by those with disabilities and impairments.
“Sometimes your environment changes too fast for you to adapt to it, and it's so important to know what to do, what not to do.
“It's so important for people to bring the very, very basic principles of self defence into their life,” Olgun explained.
Those interested in coming to the seminar are welcome to turn up on the evening.
