Impressive start from Cippenham's Senior British League quartet

Steve Munson

Cippenham’s senior British League squad got their season underway in impressive fashion this week, winning three of their four matches to stand second overall in Division B4 after the first set of fixtures.

The quartet of Martin Adams, Rob Hansell, Steve Munson and Shae Thakker all contributed decisive victories with the top three each claiming six wins from eight in their singles matches. Thakker picked up three wins.

The only blot on the copybook was the disappointing doubles form of Adams and Hansell who picked up just one win from their four matches, having been a regular source of points for the side in previous seasons.

The weekend got underway with a fairly convincing 7-2 win over Portishead, however, the scoreline belied the tightness of the early exchanges. Thakker won both of his singles matches to give Cippenham their comfortable margin.

Bottom team Horsham Spinners were Cippenham’s next opponents but proved no match for the home side, losing 6-3. Adams, Hansell and Munson won all their six singles matches.

Steve Munson was the star for Cippenham in their Sunday morning clash with Foresters 2nds from Crawley. His singles victories over Lewis Mayhew and Mark Collins were critical in the team’s narrow 5-4 win.

The one disappointing result for Cippenham came in their final match against Joola Plymouth, a 5-4 defeat.

Captain Adams beat both Oliver Cornish and Richard Marshall, while Hansell demolished Paul Giles to put Cippenham 4-3 up after seven sets.

However, Munson – who’d beaten Daniel Kerr over five games – was no match for Cornish and Thakker lost out in a tight affair with Kerr, going down 14-12 in the final game.
