Sood rescues Maids

12:00am Tue 5th Feb 08

Maidenhead 1sts got back to winning ways with hugely impressive 4-1 victory over rivals Sonning on Saturday.

For Maids it was an eloquent response to last week’s disappointing 4-2 defeat at Sunbury, which broke a five-game winning streak that stretched back to November 17.

But they proved it was no more than a blip by brushing aside one of the league’s top teams.

Sonning began the game three points ahead of their rivals, but by the final whistle Maids were level with them, moving into fifth place in the league.

They were on top from the off, taking the lead after just 10 minutes with Neel Sood, their captain, emphatically converting a penalty stroke.

It was 2-0 in a matter of minutes, Sood getting his second of the game with a thunderous short corner strike.

Ant Jones’s cross was deflected high into the net to make it 3-0 just before half-time as Maids continued to force home their superiority.

The half-time break did little to stem the flow as Maids continued to pour forward in search of more goals. Jones forced home a fourth after reacting well to a quickly taken free hit, and although Sonning did score a late consolation they left the pitch knowing they had been outplayed.
