Age has proved no barrier to sporting success for an 85-year-old Second World War veteran who has smashed a rowing world record.

David Shepherd, from Windsor, broke the 2,000m world rowing record for his age group at the Indoor World Rowing Championships in Birmingham on Sunday, October 26.

The retired carpenter and joiner made the distance in an incredible eight minutes 55 second at the weekend, shaving almost a minute off the previous record for the 2000m in the 84 to 89 year old category, set by John Hodgson, at nine minutes 48 seconds.

Mr Shepherd, who works out at Windsor Leisure Centre twice a week, said: "I think I am the oldest man in the gym and there are lots of others there who can't keep up with me!"
