Desborough into last eight

12:00am Sun 13th Jan 08

Desborough’s men secured a trip to face either Dorchester or Torquay in the quarter-finals of the Over 60 Inter-Club Double Rink Championship after beating Wiltshire side Christie Miller.

The scene at Christie Miller was set for a tight match but Len Essex and his team got off to an explosive start. They were unstoppable in the first six ends with a 15-0 lead but the home side inched their way back into contention.

At Desborough, skip Peter Hooper was having a tight match with Stan Wong at lead, Teg Hughes at No.2 and Dick Young playing No.3. They were 10-6 down after 11 ends and could not really get a foothold, edging back at times but then dropping shots.

At the three-quarter stage there were just two shots in it. Len Essex, Brett Long, John Young and Clive Behmber had survived a comeback from Christie Miller during the mid-session but then hit the ‘go’ button in the 16th end and took the match with 13 shots in six ends to give them a 15-shot advantage.

Rink scores (Desborough first), home: S Wong, T Hughes, D Jones, P Hooper 12-22. Away: C Behmber, J Young, B Long, L Essex 30-15.
