Magpies update: Threat of rain will not stop play

12:48pm Fri 5th Sep 08:: written by Dave Goodwin

The Magpies could regain top spot in Blue Square South tonight when they face Newport County at York Road (7.45pm).

Victory would take them ahead of AFC Wimbledon, a side they face on September 13.

Manager Johnson 'Drax' Hippolyte reported that striker Lee Newman, trained last night and could come into contention, but stressed he was happy with the squad who beat Fisher Athletic on Monday night in South London.

"The way they played makes it difficult for me to change much," he said, but warned Newport could prove difficult opponents.
"The have signed some good, experienced players, it takes to time to gel - let's hope it's not tonight," he said. "We will give it our best shot."

Newport, managed by ex-England B striker Dean Holdsworth, have made an indifferent start to the season and will have to recover from a tiring game on Tuesday, when they lost 2-0 to Havant and Waterlooville at Somerton Park in appalling conditions.
