OLYMPICS: Day five update

Two more medals for Great Britain overnight and two more medals from the unstoppable American Micheal Phelps.

Emma Pooley, 25, took silver in the cycling time trial, missing out on gold by 24 seconds, which was won by Kristin Armstong.

Earlier, following Team GB's bronze in the team equestrian yesterday, Tina Cook took bronze for individual eventing, securing a double bronze medal haul for the 37-year-old.

But the main action of the day was in the pool as Phelps was crowned the greatest Olympian of all time when he won his 10th and 11th gold medals. Not only that but he set another two world records in the process in the 200m butterfly (1:52.03) and the 4x200m freestyle relay (6:58.56).

Marlow rower Sarah Winckless booked her place in the women's eight final after cruising home in third place behind Canada and the Netherlands in this morning's reparchage. The final is scheduled for Sunday.

Team GB rowing leader David Tanner commented: "We've had an excellent day. Semi-finals days at a big event are always the toughest. We've also seen the unique nature of the Olympic Games which has produced some electric racing here. Who could have predicted for instance that all three medallists from
last year's world championships in the men's four would not have qualified for the Olympic final?"

Currently underway in a sweltering Beijing is the second pool game for local men's hockey stars Matt Daly and Richard Mantell. The are playing the Netherlands and are looking for their second victory after an opening game win over Pakistan. The score is currently 0-0 midway through the first half.
Log on later today to find out how the pair got on.
