OLYMPICS: Day four update

Day four in Beijing continued where it left off yesterday... gold and a new world record for American sensation Micheal Phelps in the 200m freestyle at the Water Cube.

It was gold medal number three and, even more remarkably, world record (1:42.96) number three for Phelps. He is now just one Olympic gold medal away from a record haul of 10 in his career.

More medals for GB this morning as canoeist David Florence claimed silver in the C1 Slalom event to move Britain to eighth in the overall medal table to cure the disappointment of yesterday when diving youngster Tom Daley came last and Andy Murray crashed out of the singles tennis.

The equestrian team also secured a place on the rostrum as they clinched team bronze this afternoon behind Germany and Australia in Hong Kong.

The best of the action from our local athletes came from Slough Ladies duo Kate Walsh and Alex Danson as GB battled back against Argentina to earn a 2-2 draw and keep their medal hopes alive. Argentina took a 2-0 lead but a Walsh inspired women's team levelled through Sarah Thomas and Mel Clewlow.

On the rowing lake, Marlow's Sarah Winckless was due on the water to contest the reperchage of the women's heat and hopefully secure a place in the final this weekend, but the event has now been moved to tomorrow.

Keep up to date with events from China each morning and take a look at a preview of tomorrow's action at www.maidenhead-advertiser.co.uk throughout the Olympic Games.
