Maidenhead claim bragging rights over Marlow

Maidenhead Rowing Club veterans claimed local bragging rights after overcoming their hosts at the Marlow Spring Regatta.

In the final of the rarely seen mixed novice veteran coxed quad event Marlow took the lead and stretched ahead by a length with just 250 metres to go.

But the Maidenhead crew, consisting of Alex Rant at stroke, Paul Holmes, Julie Deacon, Marion Holmes and coxed by Maggie Hendry, would not give in and kept their opponents under continual pressure.

As the finish line approached they cranked up the pace and succeeded in getting their bow across the line first - by a margin of just two feet.

In the WJ14 single sculls, Zoe Broadbent won her heat with ease and then raced to an impressive two-length win in the final.

The club also claimed a gold medal at the Ghent international rowing event in Belgium for the fourth year.

The medal was won by under 16 womens’ double sculls pairing of Fifi Bevan and Gabby Watson, while Zoe Broadbent, racing in the under 14 single sculls over 1,000m, also shone by winning her heat but eventually finished fifth out of a field of 39.
