Maids face Reading in crucial clash

4:55pm Fri 21st Mar 08:: written by Sport

It’s crunch time at Maidenhead Rugby Club. A season that started with the dreams of promotion looks to sliding towards the nightmare of relegation.

With three games remaining, against three of their relegation rivals, Maids can’t afford another slip up. However, Andy Barron, the club’s head coach, believes his players can respond.

He said: “Considering our position the feeling among the guys is very good.

“We have had some really tough training sessions and everyone has bought into the predicament we are in.”
Maids have another weekend off over Easter before facing Reading on March 29, before games with Old Patesians and Coney Hill and Barron is aware Maids will have to win those games to guarantee their safety.

He said: “Hand on heart I would like to win all three. Two out of three and the situation goes out of our hands. So we are looking at winning all three games, it’s as simple as that.”

Maids’ fitness has been criticised over the course of the season but Barron believes the players will be ready by the time they face Reading in 10 days.

“It’s something that we are working hard on. You can make a big difference in three weeks and we have pushed the players really hard. Injuries have been a major problem for us over the season so we have been reluctant to push the players in training because the squad has been so stretched.

“But the break has allowed us to get some players back from injury and the ones who weren’t fit up to speed.”
