Desborough bowled over

12:00am Sun 25th Nov 07

The end result was defeat on five out of six rinks for Desborough and the journey back to Maidenhead was probably a happy one for only four bowlers – and they were led by skip Vic Pointing.

Recent theory has it that if you have Cy Woodward in your side then there is a very good chance of winning – and sure enough  that’s what happened as he played No.3 in Vic Pointing’s team.

They were in a gritty dogfight and it was only in the last end they grabbed five shots to secure an 18-11 win.

Ron James, Dave Buckland, Percy Chambers and Alan Austin were two ahead with two ends to go but ended up losing by two, while Robert Taylor and his rink looked beaten after 16 ends, staged a minor fightback but went down 20-15.

Desborough were behind throughout the match, 24 shots back at halfway they then dropped further behind and were finally beaten 127-86.

Rink Scores (Desborough first): F Lockley, B Bellworthy, K Scowen, P Cusworth 15-27; P Finlan, P Ackroyd, J Vanderbergen, R Taylor 15-20; J Stenson, G Coussins, N McCreadie, F Shaw 11-27; R Janes, D Hill, D Dixon, M Newell 11-24; A Watson, M Bellworthy, C Woodward, V Pointing 18-11; A Austin, P Chambers, D Buckland, R James 16-18.
