Eight man Burnham hammered at home
5:38pm Sat 28th Nov 09
Burnham crashed to a heavy 5-1 home defeat against Sutton Coldfield Town this afternoon and had three players sent off as tempers boiled over in the final 20 minutes.
The Blues, who had only conceded seven league goals going into the game, never got going and were well beaten by a Sutton side who made a mockery of their lowly position in the table.
The visitors were excellent and their strike pairing of Craig Marshall and the impressive Jamie Matt caused Burnham's defence problems from the outset,
They deservedly went in front on 10 minutes when Marshall netted from the penalty spot after Matt had been fouled by Blues keeper Paul McCarthy.
Matt then got himself on the scoresheet with a close range finish on 27 minutes before McCarthy denied Marshall adding a third when he tipped a powerful header over.
As the half wore on Burnham began to press forward and they should have pulled one back but Ryan Bird wasted a glorious chance on 41 minutes when he pulled an effort wide from 12 yards.
Blues boss Jamie Jarvis made a double change early in the second half with Jordan Dowdican and Craig O'Connor coming on and Dowdican made an immediate impact.
He waltzed into the area after a mazy run and crossed for Bird who swept the ball past Simon Hands to make it 2-1.
But Sutton restored their two goal advantage when skipper Edward Booth powerfully headed his side's third before the hosts had two men sent off in the space of 10 seconds.
First Paul Brett was dismissed for a second booking following a foul on Matt and he was followed by Stuart Swift who also picked up a second yellow, this time for dissent.
Matthew Dodd then added a fourth for the visitors before Dave Tilbury received a straight red in injury time for a poor tackle on Dodd.
From the resulting free-kick James Quiggin drilled a right-footed effort into the bottom corner from 20 yards to seal a miserable afternoon for the home side.
Burnham: McCarthy, Tilbury, Hudell, Brett, Dunlop, Godwin, Coyne, Swift, Papali (C O'Connor), Bird, T O'ConnorĀ (Dowdican).
