Ex-solider takes on cycle challenge for limbless servicemen

A disabled ex-soldier from Maidenhead saddled up to ride 50 miles through three counties to raise awareness for limbless servicemen.

Brendan West, of Touchen End near Holyport, was one of 30 serving and former servicemen who took part in the 3 Counties Cycle Ride through Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire on Sunday to raise awareness for BLESMA (British Limbless Ex-Service Men’s Association).

The 51-year-old, who received a Soldiering On award for his volunteer work with the charity, said: "Cycling is a zero impact sport that allows amputees to take healthy outdoor exercise without damaging our residual limb."

He added the ride was good practice for a 300-mile London to Paris cycle he will be undertaking in August.
