The 1948 Olympic torch was on show at the Our Sporting Life exhibition opened by the mayor yesterday.
Royal Borough mayor Cllr Asghar Majeed opened the show at the Park Street centre with paralympic swimmer Jeanette Chippington, centre chairman Richard Poad, Olympic walker Ian Richards and paralympic archer Kathy Critchlow Smith.
The official opening was also attended by sports people representing their clubs. The exhibition is part of a national initiative for London 2012 to celebrate the Olympics and Paralympics and local sporting heroes.
Visitors are invited to tell their own sports stories and nominate people for a hall of fame which the centre will post on its website.
The exhibition is open 10am to 4pm Tuesdays to Saturdays until June 10.
