Theft victim Mervyn, 89, thanks public for support

An 89-year-old war veteran targeted by thieves while selling Salvation Army newspapers has thanked people for their kind response to the crime.

Major John 'Mervyn' Evans featured on the front of last week's Advertiser after he had a CD player and some cash stolen from him in Maidenhead High Street on Friday, February 24.

He has since been given a replacement CD player by a member of the public and a collection among Advertiser staff raised £56.50 for him.

Mervyn returned to the High Street on Friday and said he managed to sell his newspapers in half the usual time.
