I would have liked to have reviewed ‘Hit The Mark Theatre’s’ production of Jez Butterworth’s, highly acclaimed, no holds barred and powerful play ‘Jerusalem’, but I was otherwise engaged, appearing in it as ‘The Professor’.
Therefore, it would seem slightly biased if I were to say what a truly excellent presentation this was, with an outstanding ensemble cast led by an absolute powerhouse of a performance from Paul Taylor as Johnny Rooster Byron, the scarred protagonist of this tale of broken England.
How could I mention the fantastic set and production values, the superb direction and writing without a sense of neutrality?
So instead, let me pass on a few audience quotes that I would have mirrored had I been amongst them.
‘It is a brilliant piece of writing performed by some exceptionally talented actors.’ ‘One of the best pieces of drama I have seen in a long while. I am still aching emotionally from last night’s performance!. ‘A mind blowingly good production that crackled with passion, energy & enthusiasm.’
This fledging theatre company is aptly named, but with ‘Jerusalem’ they not so much as hit the mark, as smashed it out of the park. South Hill Park that is.
