Lowbrook Academy expansion plan passed at full council

Expansion of Lowbrook Academy, flooding and the incorporation of the Fisheries into Bray Parish were all discussed at full council on Tuesday.

The meeting, held at the town hall, saw councillors agree to spend £1.6million expanding Lowbrook so it will be able to take 30 extra children from September.

Cllr Natasha Airey, cabinet member for children’s services, said the school in Cox Green was oversubscribed and a ‘high priority’.

A report said due to an extension at the school, by September next year it will have 120 additional places available.

But Cllr Edward Wilson (Con, Clewer South) warned: “We have to plan what we do and how we fund our schools or we’re going to get into trouble.

“I like the idea we are giving parents more choice but we need to plan what responsibilities are ours and which are the schools’.”

As an academy, Lowbrook receives its funding directly from central government and is in charge of its own admissions policy.

Councillors also agreed to a community governance review which would see The Fisheries, currently in the unparished ward of Oldfield, move into the Bray Parish.

A motion by Cllr Adam Smith (Con, Riverside) calling on the Environment Agency (EA) to revise its flood maps in Maidenhead was also approved by councillors.

Cllr Simon Dudley (Con, Riverside), leader of the council, said: “I feel strongly about this issue. I don't even insure my own house for flooding but for residents that aren’t as brave this is costing them a lot of money.”

Cllr Derek Wilson (Con, Oldfield) said: “The EA spent £11m on their flood alleviation plans. They should have confidence in their own scheme to review the maps. They say they don't have the funding or the resources but it is their right to do so.”
