Fire scare for new Co-op

2:45pm Fri 3rd Oct 08:: written by Laura Enfield

Fire engines were called to a supermarket yesterday - the day the premises reopened after being ravaged by fire.

The new £500,00 Co-op in Shifford Crescent was officially opened at 10am but had to be evacuated twice when the alarms went off. It was an unwanted reminder of the fire that gutted the former Budgens store just over a year ago.

Fortunately both alerts were false alarms and no one was injured.

A spokeswoman for The Co-operative said: "Some teething problems with our fire alarm system on our first day meant that the store had to be evacuated twice as a precaution.  We apologise to our customers for any inconvenience which this caused.”
