Spencer's pub to change its name

12:10pm Tue 2nd Sep 08:: written by Sonia Kapur

A pub in the heart of Cookham village has withdrawn its application for a late licence and is planning a name change.

Spencer's in The Pound, Cookham, had recently been acquired by Greene King PLC.

They had planned to keep the popular pub open till 1.30am on Fridays and Saturdays.

The Royal Borough received more than 10 letters from residents who were against the plan. The company withdrew the application before it was discussed by councillors.

Spencer's is currently closed following major refurbishment to extend the premises. It is due to open next month with a new name - White Oak.

This news has not been welcomed by parish councillor David Ricardo, who wants owners to change the name to White Hart. This was the pub's old name before it got its existing one about 10 years ago.

  • i would have thought parish councillor David Ricardo would have better things to do than worry over the name of a public house.john rawling

  • David Ricardo is right in what he says. Let us keep some village history and tradition. Too much of the village is being lost, at least let it revert to the original name of "The White Hart."James Hatch
