Fears grow over contamination site

Concern is growing over the issue of a toxic former landfill site in Waltham St Lawrence thought to be leaking methane gas.

Danger signs have been put up around Downfield Pit as worries escalate about the site’s potential risk to public health.

The former council dump site is becoming a headache for the landowner and the Royal Borough, with both looking to solve the long-standing problem.

The council moved to block illegal surface dumping on the land with a stop notice on July 2 – but site manager Bobby Killoran said the key issue is the legacy of the underground waste.

Mr Killoran said: “It is a very dangerous site and something needs to be done about it. I put the signs up so people are aware of the problem. We are now dealing with the council in deciding what to do.”
