One year on: Parking enforcement rakes in £255,000

Nearly 15,000 tickets have been dished out to motorists since the Royal Borough took charge of parking enforcement in January.

The council, which took over from police for catching drivers flouting parking rules, will have raked in at least £255,360 in fines cash from the 14,786 tickets already issued.

The figure has been calculated using the lowest charge on a sliding penalty scale, £20, and may well be higher with some fines going up to £60.

The switch to decriminalised parking enforcement was made on January 14. Thames Valley Police said the move would enable it to focus on fighting crime.

Cllr Colin Rayner, cabinet member for highways, transport and environment, said: "Taking on this role has been one of the greatest challenges the Royal Borough has had to take on in recent years and it has gone far better than I could imagine. I thought there would be riots on the streets of Maidenhead but residents have taken it in their stride."
