Public ask council to spend on trees and snow protection

A pot of £300,000 is to be spent on three community projects backed by the public.

The Royal Borough had asked people how they wanted its capital budget spent this year - and the decision has been made.

A consultation process has ended with the council pushing ahead with plans to plant trees along roads and to buy new extreme weather equipment including extra grit boxes and a mini snow plough.

The third category endorsed by people who took part in 'your council tax - your choice' process was for improved cycle facilities. Riders will now be consulted over specific schemes.

Cllr Richard Kellaway, cabinet member for finance, said: "The three schemes which emerged the clear favourites will cost £100,000 each."

The council said it has opted not to use the remaining £200,000 in the capital budget for 2010/2011.
