Thames Valley Police will take part in a national scheme allowing parents to carry out sex offender checks on anyone in close contact with their children.

The Child Sex Offender Disclosure scheme, also known as Sara's law, was announced today by home secretary Alan Johnson.

It aims to give children better protection from known paedophiles.

More than 60 children were protected by the scheme during a 12-month pilot in Cleveland, Hampshire, Warwickshire and Cambridgeshire.

The scheme will now be rolled out in 18 other forces by the end of March 2011 including Thames Valley Police.
