Motorists caught speeding in Winkfield

11:07am Fri 5th Feb 10:: written by Justin Burns

A spate of speed happy motorists were caught by police in Winkfield yesterday morning during an operation.

Officers carried out the speed checks on Winkfield Row, Chavey Down Road, Winkfield Lane and North Street, between 8am and 11am, catching 30 drivers on 30mph limit roads.

The initiative was organised by the force in response to concerns raised by residents to officers at a recent neighbourhood action group (NAG) meeting.

Police said driver's speeds ranged from 35mph to 45mph, with those travelling at 40mph and above issued with fixed penalty notices (FPNs) of £60 and three penalty points.

Those clocking up 38-39mph were also issued with FPNs, with the option of attending a speed awareness course.

PC Bob Wade, who ran the operation, said: "Apart from the road safety aspect, it is antisocial behaviour by drivers who show no concern for others. It was disappointing to find that most of those stopped were local to the area."
