Borough supports clampdown on clampers

2:04pm Thu 4th Feb 10:: written by Glenn Mitchell

Fresh Government plans for clamping victims to claim compensation have been welcomed by the Royal Borough - but it still wants tougher measures.

An amendment to the Crime and Security Bill going through Parliament would give drivers the right to an independent appeal if they are clamped on private land.

Under the proposed Code of Practice, motorists would be able to take their cases to independent tribunals which will have the power to force firms to pay back unfair fines or towing charges, as well as awarding compensation.

Cllr Phill Bicknell, cabinet member for public protection, said: "It is certainly a step in the right direction – but it still doesn't go far enough.

"Given the outrageous behaviour of clampers in the Royal Borough we still feel that a total ban on clamping activities is the only way forward."
