Progress on campaign to preserve Town Hall

9:14am Fri 22nd Jan 10:: written by Terry Pattinson

Town Hall campaigners look set for a major victory over plans to demolish the 1930s building in Bath Road.

Council leaders expect Culture Minister Margaret Hodge to agree to make the structure a Grade II listed building.

Deputy leader James Swindlehurst told the Express: "The recommendation from English Heritage is to list the whole 1930s element."

The row has been simmering for two years and campaigners have been fighting for a listing by English Heritage.

Ministers tend not to overrule English Heritage and Miss Hodge has promised them a decision within six weeks.

The Express can reveal that she has already agreed to list 'several bits.'

In an apparent U-turn, council chiefs reassured campaigners yesterday that they will not bulldoze the main entrance of the building or the old council chamber.

This would mean a huge success for the Campaign to Save Slough's Heritage, a campaign that has attracted 1,000 online petitioners.
