Mystery of the disappearing swans

3:33pm Tue 3rd Nov 09:: written by Francis Batt

The disappearance of swans on the Thames has led to fears that they are being illegally killed and eaten.

The shocking claim was made by Mike Goodwin, 61, a self-employed publisher who has lived in Wraysbury for 25 years.

Mike said he realised something was wrong when all the cygnets belonging to two adult swans disappeared mysteriously from the river near his home. The mother swan was spotted covered in blood looking as though she put up a fight. She has since disappered.

His suspicions hardened when two female Appleyard ducks, given to him by a friend, also disappeared from the river.

Inspector Pete Dalton from Windsor Police Station said officers had met Mr Goodwin to discuss the problem. He emphasised that swans were a protected species. He said: "We would ask anyone who sees anything suspicious while they are fishing or boating to let us know."

You can call the police on 0845 8505505 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
