VIDEO: David Cameron lends support Windsor Fire Station campaign

12:50pm Wed 28th Oct 09:: written by Nick Mayo

The man vying to become the next Prime Minister has lent his support to the campaign to save Windsor Fire Station from night time closure.

Conservative Party leader David Cameron's arrival at the St Marks Road station last night was shrouded in secrecy and firefighters were delighted to see such high profile support.

He was greeted by Windsor MP Adam Afriyie, Royal Borough Tory leader, Cllr David Burbage, and Mick Rowley, fire brigades union secretary for Windsor, who told him about the Windsor Castle Fire of 1992 and then took him on a tour of the station.

The Conservative leader is the latest in a string of high profile figures, including celebrities such as Sir Elton John, Sir Terry Wogan and Barbara Windsor, to pledge their support for the cause.

Royal Berkshire Fire Authority are planning to close the Windsor station between 8pm and 8am, which has been strongly opposed by residents of the town and Royal Borough councillors who question claims that cover from Slough is sufficient. The closures at night could begin late 2010.

A Facebook support group entitled Help Save Windsor Fire Station has now reached 5,700 people. For more information visit www.windsorfirestation.co.uk
