Bringing ethnic women into politics

9:41am Tue 9th Jun 09:: written by Laura Enfield

Women from ethnic minorities are being encouraged to get involved in local politics.

An event is being held on Friday, June 26 by Royal Borough councillor Humaira Khan (pictured) and Chiltern District Councillor Mimi Harker.
They are both members of the BAME (Black, Asian and minority ethnic) Women Councillors Taskforce.

Currently across England only around 149 out of 19,617 councillors are BAME women. To fully reflect society the number would have to rise nearer to 1000.

The event at Chiltern District Council, King George V Road, Amersham, is to encourage more woman from these groups to think positively about becoming local councillors and is open to residents from the Royal Borough and the Chilterns.

Women interested in attending should register online at www.livegroup.co.uk/bame or call 0208 481 3375.
