Archaic secondary school facilities in Maidenhead are set to undergo a major overhaul after the Government promised to invest £180 million in Royal Borough classrooms.
The Government invited the borough to apply for one of its 'building schools for the future' grants last year, and it has been promised an initial instalment of £80 million followed by a later investment of £100 million.
The money will be spent on those schools most in need of serious remodelling or redevelopment, and the first amount of money is going to be spread across all secondary schools in Maidenhead.
The second input of £100 million will then go to secondary schools in Windsor, Ascot and Datchet by 2012.
Cllr Eileen Quick, cabinet member for children's services, said it would be the most expensive building project in the Royal Borough's history, but felt it was an opportunity not to be missed. The borough is expected to contribute about £4 million in costs to oversee and manage the implementation of the scheme.
