Work has started on a new Sainsbury's Local store set to open under the Travelodge in Maidenhead.

Builders are now working inside the King Street unit and a spokeswoman for the supermarket said the fitting out of the store is due to begin on Monday.

The opening date is expected to be February 20, with approximately 20-25 new jobs created.

"The new shop will offer a great fresh range and is conveniently located to allow local residents and commuters to top up their usual shop," the spokeswoman added.

The space under the hotel was initially intended for restaurant use, but little serious interest was expressed by any businesses.

A council report says Nandos offered half the asking price for it but later withdrew its offer.

Planning permission was granted to Sainsbury's in December 2011.
