Deadline approaching for police role nominations

Nominations for Thames Valley's first ever local police and crime commissioner are now open.

Voting will take place on Thursday, November 15, for the role, which will include working to ensure the police deliver an effective and efficient service.

The elected commissioner will also be responsible for how crime is tackled in the area.

Each of the 31 police force areas in England and Wales will elect a commissioner to replace the current police authority.

Royal Borough leader Cllr David Burbage (Con, Bray) and Labour candidate Tim Starkey, a barrister from Chalfont St Giles, are already known to have put themselves forward.

Police area returning officer (PARO) Andrew Grant said: "The election of a police and crime commissioner will be the biggest change in how the police service is structured for many years."

Candidates must be at least 18 years old, registered to vote, with 100 signatures supporting their nomination from people also registered to vote.

They must also pay a deposit of £5,000, which will be returned to candidates who receive more than five per cent of votes cast.

Those who work for the police or a local council, or have been convicted of an imprisonable offence, cannot stand for election.

Nominations must be submitted to the PARO by noon on Friday, October 19. A list of candidates will be published on Tuesday, October 23, and the deadline for registering to vote is Wednesday, October 31.

Poll cards with information on polling stations will be posted on Monday, October 22. Applications for a postal vote must be received by 5pm on Wednesday, October 31.

Call the PARO electoral registration office on 01296 585807 to stand for election.
