Charity for carers facing shutdown could be saved

A charity supporting carers in Windsor and Maidenhead could be saved after facing closure due to a loss in funding.

Crossroads Windsor and Maidenhead, based at Dedworth Clinic in Smiths Lane, was set up in 1992 but ran into trouble following the publication of the Care and Support Bill in 2012 which brought in a direct payments system instead of council grants.

This meant carers and people in care were given more say on where the money provided for their care was spent, resulting in a loss of income for Crossroads.

Tony Matthews, founder and chairman of trustees, said it was charging a relatively low cost per day but couldn't get the clients and therefore the money.

He added: "During the last two years this ran down our financial reserves and we struggled to find other ways of getting income. We didn't have the resources to keep ourselves afloat.

As well as providing breaks for unpaid carers looking after their loved ones at home, Crossroads also ran two day centres, one in Windsor which closed in May, and one in Maidenhead which is due to close on March 21.

However Tony hopes the services will be taken over by the Oxfordshire branch of the charity, which could result in the re-opening of the day centres.

He said: "I have been negotiating with the council's social care department and they are seeking to organise support for our former clients when we close on March 21.

"We are the only charity who supports the carer, by giving them a break from round the clock care, as well as the person who needs care so we will be very happy if we can resolve the matter."

A Royal Borough council spokeswoman said discussions between Crossroads and the council were progressing behind the scenes, with a decision expected by the end of the month.
