Golden Harp campaigners will 'not let up' even when Tesco opens

Campaigners have insisted they will continue to make life as difficult as possible for Tesco as it prepares to open an Express store on the site of the former Golden Harp pub.

The Furze Platt Action Group (FPAG) says it 'will not let up' and is planning to stage a demonstration when the store in Furze Platt Road, Maidenhead opens its doors in the spring.

Contractors are on site revamping the former pub.

The defiant objectors, who started out with an aim to get the Golden Harp back in business, will continue on their quest to encourage residents to boycott the store.

A 'Boycott the Store' petition, started-up last year, received a total of 1,500 signatures.

The FPAG, formed of more than 100 members of the Furze Platt community, is also determined to prevent history repeating itself.

Earlier this month FPAG member Ian Rose wrote to MP Brandon Lewis, the minister responsible for community pubs, urging the Government to change the law which allows pubs to be converted to shops without planning permission.

Chairman of Furze Platt Action Group (FPAG) Mark Newcombe, who lives in Gardner Road, said: "It is causing the closure of hundreds of pubs a year, something needs to be done."

Tesco purchased the former Golden Harp building in 2012.

Since the purchase FPAG's efforts have prevented Tesco from building a car park entrance in Furze Platt Road and delayed the store opening by several months.

Mark added: "Considering they have owned the shop for over a year, we have done very well to delay it."

"We gave it out best shot and we are going to monitor the situation."

The group will also hold a traffic consultation and feed the results back to the Royal Borough.

Tesco was unable to comment on the community objection and said it is 'looking forward to serving local customers'.
