Scouts set to return to Desborough College

Scouts are set to make a welcome return to Desborough College in Maidenhead for the first time in nearly three years with the launch of a new troop next year.

Sean Croft is preparing to open the doors to new scouts

The 18th Maidenhead Scouts, based at the school in Shoppenhangers Road, will welcome a new group of scouts from March.

It is currently home to about 30 cubs and beavers aged up to 10, but had to stop taking on youngsters aged between 10-and-a-half and 14 in 2011 due to a lack of leaders.

But the group has returned to strong health thanks to an influx of dedicated volunteers and parents and is looking to expand.

Former Desborough pupil Sean Croft took over as a cub/scout leader in May, and is keen to see older children join the group.

He said: "We have been very successful and we are pushing for new members.

"I think it's nice that the scouts have a respect for the uniform once they are in it and they learn and do things they would never do in their back gardens.

"At the end of the day, 11 of the 12 astronauts who walked on the moon were scouts and that's no coincidence."

The group has been based at Desborough since 1941 but suffered disaster when its headquarters burned down in 1995.

It continued to run with the support of the school, and in 2003 it opened its doors to a new hut at the site.

The group is planning a taster evening for potential scouts to find out more about what the movement does at the hut on Friday, March 28 from 7pm-9pm.

If the new troop is successful, it is hoped an explorer unit of 14 to 18-year-olds can also be launched.

The hunt is also on for adult volunteers to help out.

Contact Sean on 07778 037754 or beaver leader Carolyn Newbery on 07768367184 to find out more about joining 18th Maidenhead Scouts.
