The ambitious Chapel Arches development project to transform Maidenhead town centre is set to go before Royal Borough councillors tonight.
In a special development control meeting, the council will consider four applications from the Shanly Group to regenerate parts of High Street, Bridge Avenue, St Ives Road and the surrounding area to create flats, shops, restaurants and offices.
The £100m project is aiming to turn the waterside part of the town centre into a 'little Venice', taking inspiration from the likes of Camden Lock and the Kingston-upon-Thames river front.
It would complement Maidenhead Waterways Restoration Group's plans to enhance and improve the town's water channels, which has been given the green light by the council.
Planning officers have recommended the extensive development for approval, subject to conditions, with an application report stating the 'scheme would revive the character of this part of the town and its environs'.
It adds the proposed site has become 'largely hidden, underused and peripheral to the core of the town centre' and the new development would 'add to the vitality and viability of the town'.
Councillors will discuss outline plans to demolish part of Hines Meadow car park, La Roche gym and the Colonnade to create 162 apartments and more than 2,000 square metres worth of office, retail and restaurant space.
Full plans to redevelop land in High Street, Bridge Avenue and St Ives Road to create 80 apartments with further restaurant and retail space will also be considered.
Listed building and conservation area consent are also being sought.
Officers have recommended the borough seeks more than £2.9m in developer contributions if the scheme is approved, which would be used for improvements to York Steam and other parts of the town including schools, public spaces and highways.
The meeting will take place in the council chamber at Maidenhead Town Hall at 7pm.
