Best-selling author and former Maidenhead resident John O'Farrell has missed out in his bid to win the Eastleigh by-election.
The TV personality, who was selected as Labour's candidate, finished fourth with 4,088 votes - behind Liberal Democrat winner Mike Thornton (13,342), UKIP's Diane James (11,571) and Conservative candidate Maria Hutchings (10,559).
O'Farrell, a satirical writer who grew up near Boulters Lock and attended Desborough School, is a lifelong member of the Labour Party and was standing following the resignation of the Hampshire town's Liberal Democrat former MP Chris Huhne.
In the 2001 general election the ex-Courthouse Junior School pupil unsuccessfully contested Theresa May's Maidenhead seat.
