The person who threatened to jump off an M40 bridge and caused chaos for motorists on Tuesday night was a 17-year-old boy.
The teenager was spotted on the wrong side of the barriers on the bridge over the busy motorway on Tuesday shortly before 2pm near the juction with Cressex Road in High Wycombe.
Police had to close the motorway in both directions from junction 4B to 3. It took officers hours to persuade the teenager to not jump.
The closure caused delays across the areas. The motorway was not fully open again until 7.30pm.
Police originally said the person was a man but confirmed his age this week. He has been arrested on suspicion of causing a danger to road users and has been released on bail until April 17.
