Sophia Candappa has gained selection for the England under 17 squad which will travel to Cardiff in March to compete in the 2008 European Championship.
Candappa, 15, is now the fifth Eagles Netball Club player to be part of an England squad, and after hearing of her selection she said: “I couldn’t believe it when I opened the envelope and realized I had been selected to represent England.
“It’s a big honour and something I’ve worked really hard for. I’m sure I will enjoy every minute.”
This news comes hot on the heels of a string of successes for the Maidenhead-based Eagles Netball Club.
Three young Eagles – Sophie Harding, Fran John and Hannah Thompson – were selected for regional screening, while the club itself has just been awarded a Silver CAPS and Clubmark Award.
Eagles coach Maria D’amaro said: “I’m absolutely delighted with the achievements of all our young Eagles. They have worked hard and are now enjoying the successes they so thoroughly deserve.
“I am particularly proud of Sophia who is not only a talented netballer but whose work ethos has driven her to this great achievement. She is an inspiration and has been a pleasure to coach.
“I wish Sophia and all the girls every success in the future.”
