Magpies set for Friday night football

3:12pm Mon 1st Sep 08:: written by Steve Spencer

Maidenhead United FC are gearing up for their first Friday night game of the season, when they entertain former League club Newport County on Friday at York Road for a 7.45pm kick-off.

The Magpies are expecting a big crowd as the same fixture last season attracted one of United's biggest attendances of the year and with the switch to a Friday night game, an even bigger crowd could descend on York Road.

And Friday night football could become a more regular occurence at the stadium. Director Peter Griffin said: "We have switched the match due to the World Cup qualifiers and international fixtures on Saturday.

"We are hoping for a big crowd for Friday night's game and we may well consider playing other games on Friday nights if it proves to be popular. Newport have a great traveling support and the atmosphere at our matches with them is always special.

"With Reading and Wycome drawing crowds from this area it would mean that even if Reading and Wycombe are playing at home on a Saturday, local football fans will still have the opportunity to see the second biggest team in Berkshire play on a Friday night."
