Maidenhead versus Maidstone muddle

3:26pm Thu 14th Aug 08:: written by Gareth McPherson

It seems that Maidenhead is suffering from a case of mistaken identity.

Locals complain that they tell someone they are from Maidenhead, only for the other person to politely correct them and insist they live 75 miles away in the Kent town.

The confusion ahs become so infuriating for some, that they have set up a forum on social network site, Facebook, to share experiences.

One wrote: "I spent the first half of my life in Maidenhead and I''ve spent the remaining time correcting people that Maidstone is not Maidenhead."

  • I've has this for years, someone asks 'Where are you from?' and when you say Maidenhead they either respond 'Oh that's in Kent isn't it?' , or, 'Oh, by the sea, how lovely'. Now I have actually given up and usually just tell them I'm from Windsor (and 'yes, I am great friends with the Queen') or London.Anon

  • We moved from Maidenhead to the Midlands when I was 12 and obviously having such a different accent, everyone used to ask where we hailed from. Given the answer, they always said " Oh yes, that's in Kent!" That was 27 years ago!!Butts
