'No risk' of card cloning, says petrol station owner

12:00am Thu 10th Jan 08:: written by Luke Cross

The owners of a petrol garage store under fire amidst a barrage of card cloning claims have assured customers that there is 'no risk'.

One bank worker said this week that hundreds could have been stung by card fraud at the Somerfield-run Texaco garage, in Bridge Road, Maidenhead.

The Advertiser has been contacted by numerous readers saying they were hit around the Christmas period.

But Pete Williams, spokesman for Somerfield, which operates store and sales at the garage, said the company is working with police on a 'small number of irregularities.'

He said: "The matter has been dealt with and we are confident that there is no risk to customers at this store."
Mr Williams said the issue has led to a 'small number of customer complaints' which are being treated 'seriously and as a priority’.

He added: "Anyone who feels that they have a complaint following a visit to the petrol forecourt in early December 2007 should contact their bank in the first instance.
"They can also register their complaint with the store manager or call our customer services department on 0117 935 6669 and we will deal with this as a priority."

  • I was a victim of card fraud in august 2007, and would seem very likely from a petrol station as my card was used almost exclusively for petrol. But despite all the problems it caused me ,my nagging doubt was where did it happen? I so frequently visited this garage for petrol i never gave it a thought,i am now convinced that this fraud happened back last summer to me.JCOLLINS

  • I have now had my card cloned twice in the last 3 months! I was under the impression that the new chip and pin cards were safer and more secure but for me it's been quite the opposite. I can't believe that someone working in the petrol station doesn't know that a machine has been tampered with, it's ridiculous. The owners have a responsibility to provide a secure service and if they can't then they should shut the garage down until they are satisfied that everything is safe and should run dSWorth

  • I too regularly use this garage and had money fraudulently withdrawn from my current account in New York on the 18th December. Too much of a coincidence. I've come across loads of people complaining about this garage.Anna
