Fisher sinks at The Open

7:00am Fri 25th Jul 08:: written by Steve Spencer

Ross Fisher crumbled on the final day of the 137th Open Championship at Royal Birkdale to fall from fifth on the leaderboard to 39th.

The Ascot golfer had played the torrid weather conditions almost perfectly as his competitors succumbed around him. A round of 71 on Saturday put the European Open champion in contention for the greatest prize in the sport.

However, a final round 79 saw him slip to 16 over par, while Ireland's Padraig Harrington shot three over par to win the Claret Jug for the second year running.

A triple-bogey on the 17th saw the Wentworth pro tumble down the leaderboard.

Fisher carded 72, 74, 71 and 79 for a total of 296 and won £16,570.

His final standing sees Fisher slip to 11th in the Ryder Cup points list.
