WATCH: Council takes strike action
4:19pm Wed 16th Jul 08:: written by Sonia Kapur
A small but determined group of council workers formed a picket line for pay strikes today.
Just 40 out of the potential 450 Unison members called time on work for the day and some set themselves up outside the town hall in St Ives road with posters, flags and placards for the start of the two day strike.
Relieved council bosses said the impact on services was minimal and the only thing directly affected was a library story-time event which had to be cancelled.
The dispute over pay has been on the cards since February, and the action has come after these negotiations failed.
According to UNISON, many of its members are among the lowest paid workers in the UK, earning less than £6.50 an hour.
If the pay row is not resolved UNISON has said it will organise further strike action in the autumn.
