Morgan quick to criticise Wraysbury

8:20am Fri 11th Jul 08:: written by Nick Meakin

Poor fielding belied a thrilling win for Wraysbury as they successfully chased down Englefield’s score of 286.

Wraysbury’s fielders spilled six catches including twice dropping both Englefield centurions, Wall (140) and Detheridge (117).

A sharper fielding display could well have seen a much easier win against the league’s third from bottom side but Wraysbury were not made to pay for their profligacy in field as they produced a bullish batting display led by captain Gordon Morgan who scored 82.

However despite the win captain Morgan was left in no doubt that his side need to make some immediate improvements for their next win.

“We were pleased with the win, as it was a big total to chase down,” he said. “But we never should never have let that happened. We had a nightmare in the field and we were lucky that their bowling line-up wasn’t that strong.”

Morgan, who was responsible for two of the dropped catches added: “The drop catches were only part of it - our ground fielding just was not good enough.

“It’s something we’re going to have to improve as poor fielding upsets the rest of the side.

“It makes us look lazy as if we’re not trying hard enough and it’s quite depressing as a captain. We must draw a line underneath this and make sure that we don’t have another performance like this again this season.”

The skipper was particularly aggrieved at some of the fielding from some of the younger team members.

“It’s not the older guys that are making the mistakes, some of the younger players are not giving their all,” he added. “I wouldn’t have dreamed of not diving around to stop runs 20-odd years ago and we’d like a similar commitment.”

There was no such criticism for Wraysbury’s batsmen who recovered from the early loss of a couple of wickets to smash 290-6 from only 46 overs with Morgan, Aref Poppezia (60) and Andy Pasad (77) the mainstays with the bat.

“We’ve chased down totals like that in the past so we were pretty confident that we’d have enough to win,” added Morgan. “We’d lost our previous games so it was important that we finished the game with a big win and I’m pleased we achieved  that.”
