2:57pm Tue 10th Jun 08:: written by Francis BattThe whole world converged on one village on Saturday - as African wildlife, a Japanese geisha and an American astronaut paraded through the streets at Old Windsor Carnival. This year’s theme was Countries of the World. The floats all lined up in Tyle Place soon after 1pm, before setting off in a procession through the village led by the Melton Mowbray Toy Soldiers Marching Band. The winning Wing Memorial Cup went to the Royal School which had recreated Kenya in its float. "But the weather cleared up nicely and it couldn’t have been a better three days."
Old Windsor Brownies had the best youth float winning the Arthur Hartley Cup for recreationg Hawaii, while Kings Court First School won the Wright Cup for most creative float for recreating Antarctica.
Most amusing float went to Battersea Dogs Home’s Old Windsor kennels.
Adding glamour to the procession was 15-year-old Lara Husain, this year’s carnival queen. Langley Grammar School pupil Lara is no stranger to villagers as she lives in Old Windsor and even works in the Friary Pharmacy.
As usual the carnival was spread over three days, beginning on Friday with a donkey derby and firework display.
Saturday was the big day, with the parade and events on the recreation ground. And on Sunday there was a football match and an inaugral netball match for adults.
The carnival’s deputy chairman Steven Winton said: "We were seriously worried on the Tuesday before the carnival when it rained all day. If the recreation ground is saturated we couldn’t let the carnival parade lorries on at the end of the procession. This has happened in the past and casts a real dampener.
